The Art of Layering: How Textile Art Creates a Collected Interior

There is something I love about a room that looks as though it has evolved over time.

Not everything matches. Not everything comes from the same collection. Yet somehow, the pieces speak to one another.

That is what I think of as the art of layering.

In this room, I brought together an original textile wall hanging, two framed mixed-media portraits, and a handcrafted textile pillow. Each piece has its own personality, but together they create a larger visual story.

Start With a Statement Piece

The large textile wall hanging becomes the anchor of the room.

Unlike conventional framed artwork, textile wall art introduces dimension, softness, and movement. Layers of fabric, stitching, irregular edges, and hand-worked surfaces allow the artwork to change subtly depending on the light and your vantage point.

For me, those imperfections are important. They reveal the artist's hand.

Add Art That Creates Conversation

The two framed portraits introduce another element—the human presence.

Placed beside the larger textile work, their scale creates contrast, while their earthy colors visually connect them to the wall hanging.

When creating a collected interior, artwork does not need to match. In fact, I find rooms more interesting when different pieces create relationships through color, texture, emotion, or story.

 

Bring the Art Into the Room

The textile pillow completes the composition.

A pillow may be a smaller object, but it can perform an important role in interior design. Here, the layered fabrics echo the wall hanging's construction and visually carry the artwork from the wall onto the furniture.

Suddenly the art is not simply something we look at.

It becomes part of the room.

Creating a Home That Feels Collected

I have always been drawn to interiors filled with objects that seem to carry histories—art discovered over time, textiles touched by the hand, old pieces beside contemporary ones, and unexpected combinations of color and pattern.

For me, a beautiful interior should reveal something about the person who lives there.

Original art and handcrafted textiles make that possible because no two pieces carry exactly the same story.
